Behind the church of St. Agnes Outside the Walls is a small but lovely garden.
It’s very peaceful here. Beside the church on one side, walls separate the garden from the street as well as other parts of the complex (which, among there things, contains a school, complete with playgrounds).
On one side is a little Marian shrine, set within a grotto.
All along the walls leading to the shrine are the wonderful little ex-voto plaques (shown at the top of this post) left by grateful believers who have worshipped here and believe their prayers answered. Many of them merely say, “Grazie.”
Walking past the shrine, you will find that someone took the time to make a plain wall into something wonderful: a giant, graceful swirl.
