Happy Valentines Day!

You’ll find them everywhere in Rome, chubby flying babies, usually male, often with wings. Known as putti, they are often equated with Cupid, the son of the goddess of love, Venus, and the god of war, Mars.

After my Valentines Day post last year where we visited the rather creepy reliquary containing the skull of St. Valentine in Santa Maria in Cosmedin, I decided this year to bring you some of the wonderful putti that decorate the magnificent Palazzo Colonna, which will be the subject of my next blog post.  Happy Valentines Day!
